DANGERBEAR FULL RULES

HELLO FRIENDS. HERE ARE THE FULL RULES FOR DANGERBEAR.

Please note the content warnings in advance: there is vore/cannibalism, monster transformation, and possible mental/emotional influence (betrayal traitor* style).

(*Betrayal Traitor: the character will receive a memory, believing this memory to be their own for the duration of the game.)

Premise

Dangerbear is a round-based fighting tournament with a twist: everyone is capable of turning into their monster (optional), and everyone is plagued with an insatiable hunger (not optional). There is no food available to anyone during the game: the only food available to inmates are each other.

Every round, all participating inmates are locked in their own cellblock rooms. Here, cellblocks take two IC hours (1-2 OOC days) to decide their hunting targets from a list of every participant of the game. Once time is up, designated inmates will go on their hunting spree.

Should multiple parties pick the same target, they will all be made to fight each other for that target in a mini-tourney (e.g. all hunters are paired off until one hunter remains).

While fights resolve, all inmates are released into a single room, where they await their hunters.

A hunter may not choose whether to kill, but they may choose whether to eat. However, should they choose to forego eating, they will allow their cellblock to starve for that round, testing the collective cellblock's sanity and making the next round more dire.

Due to the nature of this game, Echidna will not be participating in the rounds. However, they are available during the mingle period IF the Echidna player wants to be there and available for potential mingle-specific nommings.

Gameplay

  • 3 rounds total, running from Monday, June 27th through Saturday, July 2nd (but there will definitely be fallout on Sunday)
  • Each round will last at least 24 hours, with 24 hours of mingle time in-between each round.
  • During the 24 hour decision making period, cellblocks will choose their targets.
  • Please note: Round 1 will last 48 hours for an adjustment period. Additionally, new rounds will be posted immediately so you technically have ~48 hours per round.
  • If someone is chosen as a victim multiple times, the hunters will be paired off to determine who gets to kill the victim.

Positions

The Heart is OOCly determined, but the Mouths are ICly determined every round (i.e. someone who was a Mouth during Round 1 doesn't have to be a Mouth during Round 2).
  • Heart - 1 inmate per cellblock max
    • The "heart" of the cellblock. Should this inmate die, the whole cellblock will go berserk.

  • Mouth - 2 inmates per cellblock minimum
    • The hunters of the cellblock. These inmates hunt on behalf of the cellblock and satiate the cellblock's hunger.
    • If there are not enough Mouths to hunt twice, the cellblock's sole Mouth may hunt twice in one round.

  • Hand - Unlimited
    • The attendants to the Heart, or otherwise, the Heart's sacrificial decoys. Losing a Hand isn't the end of the world.

Hunger Meter

  • Every cellblock has a hunger meter. This hunger is shared: if one cellblock member eats, then the rest of the cellblock will feel their hunger alleviated.
  • Blood-sucking (fatal) or soul-eating (fatal,,,) also count toward alleviating hunger. Please ask your thread partner to check whether they're OK with straight up cannibalism or if they would prefer blood sucking/soul eating!
  • A Mouth may take their prey back to their cellblock for others to eat if they prefer.
  • At the beginning of each round, each cellblock gains 1-2 points of hunger.
  • When a cellblock caps out at 3 points of hunger, the whole cellblock will go berserk.

Food Points

  • Heart = 3 points of food
  • Hand = 1 point of food
  • Mouth = 0 points of food—Mouths do not satisfy hunger whatsoever.

Fight Resolution

All fights resolve in the following manner:
  • Mouth vs Hand: The Mouth wins every time.
  • Mouth vs Heart: The Mouth wins every time. Additionally, the whole cellblock goes berserk.
  • Everything Else: Both inmates roll 1d6; highest determines the winner. (Or: discuss with your partner and decide what is Coolest™ and Most Enjoyable™.)
    • Ties result in both parties being injured, but returning to their cellblocks alive.
    • If it's a group fight, please talk amongst each other about what is the Coolest™ and Most Enjoyable™.

Berserk

  • Inmates can go berserk a number of ways:
    • The Heart is eaten
    • The cellblock reaches max hunger
    • [REDACTED GAME SPOILERS]

  • When an inmate goes berserk, the following occurs:
    • [REDACTED GAME SPOILERS]

Powers, Healing, & Death

  • All items are kept, except for consumable food items.
  • All inmates have their abilities until they enter the hunting grounds.
  • All inmates are additionally capable of turning into their monsters, gaining their monster's capabilities (e.g. a dragon can breathe fire and fly).
  • Healing is slowed when the cellblock's hunger meter is at 2+. Should an inmate receive a life-threatening injury, they cannot heal fast enough to survive unless their hunger meter is at 1 or less. This is including healing via powers.
  • Healing is accelerated when the cellblock's hunger meter is at 0. Should an inmate receive treatment for a life-threatening injury, it's reasonably certain the inmate will survive.
  • When an inmate dies, [REDACTED GAME SPOILERS].

Win Criteria & Post-Game

  • Winners are determined by highest # of successful kills and lowest hunger meters.
  • Winners will receive full healing.
  • Losers will receive minimal revivals, and be afflicted with insatiable hunger of some kind (literal, can't get full no matter what; cannibalistic, needs human flesh; metaphorical, needs some sort of substance; psychological, desires vengeance; etc). Additionally, mental effects will persist for some time after the game (1-3 IC days, or: however long you want to play with it for).

Is there an official hiatus option/explanation for characters who are completely not participating?

As Al said on Discord: There won't be anything specific but a mingle post can be put up for characters who are not participating!

All inmates are additionally capable of turning into their monsters, gaining their monster's capabilities (e.g. a dragon can breathe fire and fly).

QUICK Q does this apply only to the powers we have already ICly unlocked via prison shop purchase, or are all the powers our monster might have available to our characters for the duration of the game?

Will signups stay open throughout the game, or will they be closing before game start? Just because at the moment I know I can absolutely be part of rounds 1 and 2, but 3 is TBD at the moment and I won't know until we're well into round 2 if I can participate in round 3. (I HOPE THAT SENTENCE MAKES SENSE.)

signups will stay open throughout the game! they're for player reference only, I will have sign-ins for each round so I know what the roster looks like per round (and people can sign in late if they want to I will just announce that the roster is updated)

hi yog sorry if i cannot read but does the heart change each round, if it's the same heart do they have to be there every round?
sharknundo: (♭ sometimes we need it all)

Re: QUESTIONS

[personal profile] sharknundo 2022-06-23 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
the Heart does not change each round! if the Heart is picked to be eaten it's always going to be a loss so it will be handwaved (handwoven?) that the Heart was eaten, so the player does not have to be Right There Exactly In That Round Specifically.

How involved is each round? Can we feasibly participate in them as long as we do dice rolls to decide battles, even if we don't thread things out?
sharknundo: (♭ in time)

[personal profile] sharknundo 2022-06-23 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing that's necessary participation is the OOC decision of who's getting picked / who's winning battles! So you don't have to thread things out :|b

Re: QUESTIONS

[personal profile] sharknundo 2022-06-23 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
EXAMPLE: Phoenix, Cerberus, Yatagarasu, and Sphinx all choose to target a specific member of Basilisk.
- Phoenix and Cerberus will fight each other first
- Yatagarasu and Sphinx will fight each other first
- the winners of those 2 fights will fight each other
- the last one standing will get to fight the Basilisk

Since that may result in a lot of fight threads I highly encourage people using the dice mechanics for smooth progression o>

ANOTHER question about "All inmates are additionally capable of turning into their monsters, gaining their monster's capabilities (e.g. a dragon can breathe fire and fly)"

Actually two. 1, do they turn fully into their monsters (mentally too) or only physically? And 2, do they have to do a complete physical transformation into the monster to gain the abilities or can they just use the abilities/partially transform/etc.?
sharknundo: (♭ (open rifts))

Re: QUESTIONS

[personal profile] sharknundo 2022-06-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
1) Originally I thought just physically but thinking on it more I am A-OK with it also being mentally! However people want to do it.
2) I will allow partial transformations!

For berserking, I know it's [REDACTED GAME SPOILERS], but TO THE EXTENT YOU CAN ANSWER:

Is the berserking going to be Reverie-monster-based? i.e. if Vicious goes berserk, is that strictly his panther taking over and going berserk, or could I have him go berserk in his canon demonic style? Or some combo of the two?

ALSO: If Vicious has a canon power that's cannibalistic (consuming people's life energy until they're reduced to ash) can he use that for eating?

Re: QUESTIONS

Berserking is not mandatory Reverie-monster based! You can have him go berserk in his canon demonic style or a combo of the two. Either way works!

Also he can use that for eating yes!!

What happens in the case of a round where a team only has 1-2 players signed up? Are the characters playing going to have to double up a bunch of roles that round?

Re: QUESTIONS

[personal profile] truthliesinspace 2022-06-28 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Question: If a character gets eaten, are they dead for the rest of the game?
Question 2: If someone, who's name rhymes with Raito, has a terminal illness that's slowly been killing him, if the other player agrees to it, if he gets picked no matter his role--can he die stupidly from his disease and the other monsters can eat his corpse?

aka can I clown.
